Horrockses Fashions; Off the Peg Style in the '40s and '50s' lecture

A wonderful opportunity to listen to Dr Christine Boydell, expert in Twentieth century fashion and textiles.  Dr Boydell will take you through the fascinating history of one of the most respected ready-to-wear labels of the 40s and 50s.  The clothes had a distinctive look and were famous for their colourful cotton floral prints often made in full skirted summer frocks.  There will be a chance for questions and answers as well as an opportunity to get your hands on some original Horrockses garments

Dr Christine Boydell is Senior Honorary Research Fellow at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK where she lectured for seventeen years. She is a design historian with a special interest in the history of twentieth century fashion and textiles and has published widely on these subjects

Christine has curated a number of exhibitions including ‘Horrockses Fashions: Off the Peg Style in the ’40 and ‘50s’ at the Fashion & Textile Museum, London (2010) and ‘Taking the Plunge’ an exhibition devoted to the history of swimwear at the Snibston Discovery Museum, Leicestershire (2013-14) and ‘Riviera Style: Resort and Swimwear Since 1900’ at the Fashion & Textile Museum, London (2015)

Hairaid shelter lecture

I am delighted to announce that the team from Hair Raid Shelter will be demonstrating how to updo and create lovely vintage hair styles to make you look fabulous. Not only that they will be brining a marvelous collection of hair and beauty related artefacts for you to gaze upon – you can even have a flick through their extensive collection of beauty magazines from the 1930’s onwards.

Join Hair Raid Shetler for 2 hours of fun in this entertaining and informative lecture. Live demonstrations, question and answer session and a chance to learn something about the fascinating history of hair and make-up from the 1930s onwards with lots of lovely items to look at too – why wouldn’t you?!

Millinery workshop

We are to be joined by local milliner Sarah Valentine of https://www.scarlettvalentine.com/ who will be running a 2 1/2 hour Tilt or Percher hat workshop.  Sarah will assist you in converting a standard wool felt hat to the most fabulous 40’s fashion accessory.  All you need is to turn up with your starter hat and she will provide the rest with the opportunity for you to dive into her substaintial stock ofcorsages, flowers, feathers, petersham and veiling!  This workshop is suitable for all levels and hand sewing will be involved.

Places are limited to 10, booking is essential.

Felt Pansy Corsage Workshop

Spend a delightful 2 hours working with Lisa, from Bobobun, hand sewing and creating your very own unique pansy corsage. Suitable for all levels. All the resources, plus refreshments, will be provided for you to make your own lovely fashion accessory.
